Just wanted to point out that all of the gibberish on the Events Calendar is being cleaned up.  Somebody thought it was essential to post a bunch of SEO spam or something in there, so we've since disabled the ability for non-members of the website to post/edit events.  You can still sign-up and post for free, but please...  no spam!

REVIEW: Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
Directed by Peter Sollett
Release Date:  10/03/2008
Studio:  Sony
TFM Score:  • • •

You may have asked yourself, "hey, why haven't we had any Hot Topic-friendly movies this year with super inde hand-drawn titles this year?"  If you're reading this, then you can clearly see that your hunger for block letters on movie posters will soon be fed.  Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist opens the first week of October, and fortunately, it brings with it a lot more than a hip graphic designer.

Based on the the novel by the same name, 'Nick and Norah' chronicles the budding romance of two high school seniors searching the streets of NYC for clues that could lead them to a super secret show by their mutually favorite inde rock band.  And, as with all coming of age teeny love stories, [trailer voice] they'll also find clues...  to who they really are on the inside. [/trailer voice]

The rom-com elements are predictible, but it never gets annoying.  Peter Sollett, director of the film school favorite Raising Victor Vargas, brings a style to the genre that provides a really fresh take on the subject matter.  There are several moments when the film takes a step backward, or maybe a step sideways...  and we're treated to slow, deliberate beauty shots of the city - reminding of the best moments from American Beauty in a way.  That's really not something one might expect in a movie that also tries to win over the Superbad crowd by having a 3/4 gay band rename themselves A Fistfull of Assholes (formerlly known as The Jerk Offs, btw).  There's a level of maturity that Sollett injects here that would have been lost on a lesser filmmaker.  That said, some of the funniest moments in the film are not something I'd be comfortable calling "mature."Write Comment (0 comments)

Hamlet 2: They took a wrong turn in Albuquerque, but got there none the less

Hamlet 2
Directed by Andrew Flemming
Release Date:  08/22/2008
Studio:  Focus Features
TFM Score:  • • • •
Local ties:  Set in Tucson, AZ

Yeah, you read the title of this film correctly...  and no, Mel Gibson ain't in it.  But 'Tucson, AZ' is in Andrew Fleming's Hamlet 2, and some might argue that it's the main character.

The film, which was shot in Albuquerque to capitalize on New Mexico's famous tax breaks for filmmakers, smacks Tucson around like a Miracle Mile pro.  It's weird - so much effort was put into blasting the Old Pueblo, but Tucsonans at the Park Place Cinemark multiplex tonight seemed proud of being berated.  There were no groans during any of the Tucson bashing...  only cheers and clapping.  I wonder what residents of Albuquerque might think of this film.  I mean, Tucson might be the 'place dreams go to die,' but Albuquerque is the place that's enough like Tucson to pass for it in a movie...  but only much cheaper to use.  Now, on to the film's other characters...Write Comment (4 comments)

Tower Theatres 'policy trailer' contest: WIN FREE MOVIES FOR A YEAR!!!

I apologize for not having all of the details in order, but I recently found out about a cool little contest over at Tower Theatres.  They're offering a year's worth of free movies for the creator of the best 'policy trailer' (think Martin Scorcese's "don't talk on your cell phone" bit for Cingular).

Details are coming soon, especially since the deadling for entries is coming too.Write Comment (1 comments)
TucsonCitizen Opinion: "Planet of the Rapes"

The comedy genre has a history of political incorrectness. From Lenny Bruce to the Monty Python gang, Sacha Baron Cohen to Dave Chappelle, wrapping cultural taboos and tragedies in humor is guaranteed to offend some of the people all of the time. But the results can also be cathartic, help us to understand an issue from a different perspective, make us think about why we hold a particular belief to be true or add levity to an event that makes no sense.  As Lester (Alan Alda) so eloquently says in Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors," "Comedy is tragedy plus time," and it's true. It's all about context.
When Bill Maher criticized the U.S. government less than a week after 9/11, not enough time had passed for some people to be able to handle the joke. Plus, "Politically Incorrect" was on a major network (ABC) with huge advertisers and no other comic with that kind of forum (David Letterman, Jay Leno) went there. Support him or hate him, Maher's comments spawned discussions and reflection about the right to question The Deciders.
Often, of course, a joke doesn't work. Regardless of how well it's crafted - even the thinnest fart gag can be funny - results are dependent upon the recipient. Artist intent gets kicked to the curb.

"THE SING-A-LONG WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY" (1971, dir. Mel Stuart, USA, 100 mins., rated G)
This timeless classic, based on the children's book by Roald Dahl, is a "scrumdillyumptious" musical extravaganza full of strange humor, wild set design and some valuable lessons about how to be a "good kid" (not to mention those crazy Oompa Loompas!). When young Charlie finds a golden ticket in his chocolate Wonka Bar, he (along with four other kids) wins the chance of a lifetime . . . to visit the mysterious Willy Wonka's amazing, confectiionary chocolate factory. However, this sweet candy-coated tour begins to turn sour when Wonka teaches the bratty children some harsh lessons to correct their bad behavior. Soon only the good-natured Charlie remains, but what does Wonka have in store for him . . .?
This singalong version of the film has all the fabulous musical numbers subtitled so the audience can sing along, and everyone gets a Wonka Goodie Bag, filled with fun props to use during the movie. Moviegoers also meet the Loft Cinema's own Oompa Loompas and have the chance to compete in the Willy Wonka Burping Contest.
