Back before the early monsoon, back at the beginning of June with barely any humidity, we gathered for the First Friday Shorts on a perfect hot Tucson night, and it was good. Max, our toasty host, seemed especially cheerful and he picked up on the series of B-Movie action trailers that screened as the crowd took their seats. One of the trailers featured “Jaguar,” an international assassin, and “Jaguar” became the running gag of the night. Max kicked off the evening with a mock commercial for Douche-bag Cologne, and it was funny – must be on the Web.

REMINDER: Team America Sing-A-Long @ Loft is 1st Friday -- 'First Friday' Shorts is 2nd Friday

This year's Independence Day celebrations will be taking place on the first Friday of July (the 4th, duh!) and that means that The Loft Cinema's annual sing-and-cuss-a-thon featuring Trey Parker's Team America: World Police will be screened Friday night.

What does this mean?  Well, for First Friday frequenters of The Loft it means that you'll still be able to get your drink on and laugh til you wet yourself in your favorite Loft seat, but if you want to do this to the talents of local filmmakers you'll have to wait another week.  The Loft's "First Friday Shorts" will actually take place on July's 2nd Friday, the 11th.

48-hr Backlash: Local groups not amused by 'rape' film, less amused by awards

There was quite the mixed reaction in the audience last month at The Loft Cinema's 48-Hour Shootout when Team Thomas' Planet of the Rapes was awarded the "Best Overall Film" prize.  The film, which won a majority of the awards for the night including trophies for Best Actress and Best Use of the Elements, is a dead-pan satirical view of a male-dominated future that sees a female rocket scientist repeatedly degraded by her male space-shipmates before accidentally transporting her to an alien planet that is accustomed to routine gang rapes of female visitors.

You can read the 'guest opinion' response from today's Tucson Citizen below.  The article was written by Virginia Yrun and Sarah Jones, the heads of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault and Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse respectively.

Building a superhero costume

You know, one thing I never thought I would do is walk into a ballet supply store and buy a leotard.  Oh, what a crazy world we live in.  I've been working on a film that my buddy Roman Rodriguez wrote called Batman's Bad Day, and as the title suggests the film is filled with superheroes.

I contemplated heading over to Creative Costumes and picking up some off-season Halloween costumes for the characters (running about $60 each for the adult sizes) but decided against it, opting to go for a more authentic look.

The summer 48 Hour Shootout Film Festival at The Loft Cinema has come and gone, but not without a little controversy. There was once again a great turn out and a sense of anticipation and excitement in the crowd moments before the event kicked off.

Congrats to Team Thomas - big winners at The Loft's Shootout!

Just got home from the 48-Hour Shootout Screening and Awards Show at The Loft and I just had to be the first person to pop online and give a shout-out to Team Thomas for a near-sweep of the awards at this year's show.  "Planet of the Rapes" is a very funny film, and in the tradition of every film competition at The Loft, humor won big!  The film wasn't so popular with everyone in attendence, but I'm thinking that was kinda the point.  So props to them for a job well done (you guys were robbed for the 'audience choice' award, but then again that award is never fair).

The Thomas clan recently uploaded the film to YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ie3xRufLUdo).  You can view their other films onlin on their YouTube page here:  http://www.youtube.com/user/jthomaspsychic

Completed films from the Tucson 48 Hour Film Shootout will be screened and an esteemed judging panel will select the overall Best Film of the competition. The $500 Grand Prize will be awarded to the winning filmmaking team. But that’s not all … the audience will also vote for their favorite film, which will be awarded a $250 prize!

Previous winners of THE TUCSON 48 HOUR FILM SHOOTOUT have gone on to fame (sorta), fortune (maybe not exactly, but close) and cinematic acclaim (definitely!), and most (but possibly not all) have managed to avoid jail time since their respective wins.

General admission to the public screening/awards show is only $5.00.

Packed to bursting, the Year-End Showdown for the third year of the Loft Cinema’s First Friday Shorts contest was a pure joy ride for contest fans and newcomers alike. For die-hard gong junkies like myself, it was a sentimental journey through 12 months of contests. So many fine films, so much comic talent, and none of the bad films to detract from the pleasure. And from this competitive scrum one champion emerged, and I got the scoop in an interview with the winning filmmaker, but you’ll have to read to the end to get the dirt.

A long overdue review for April, but just in time to remind readers and fans of the Loft’s First Friday Shorts contest that this coming Friday will be the Year End Showdown wherein all the winners from the past 12 months compete for the grand prize. And my apologies for the interminable delay.
